Upgrade Your Qualifications / Skills in Vancouver:
Upgrade you qualifications as soon as
you possibly can. I have seen highly qualified and experienced
professionals reduced to over the counter labor class jobs just because
their foreign qualifications are not recognized in Canada and especially
in British Columbia... General Mangers and Bank Vice Presidents working as
Security guards is quite a common sight in Vancouver BC... For those guys
their age may be a limiting factor...
However I have also seen younger
Engineers sweeping floors at Seven Eleven stores or young qualified and
experienced Doctors doing the job of medical aids... and some of them
consider themselves lucky with even this level of job... because there are
others even worse. So if you can upgrade your qualifications. Though
please note that upgrading your qualification does not ensure a job
either. But then are there any assurances in life?
You can easily get into evening / part
time courses. You can even get student loans to sponsor your self. These
are usually very easy payment options.
Yes… If you have any professional
qualifications… start looking into the process of getting yourself
accredited/ certified in British Columbia… in fact it would be a good idea
to find the relevant information even before you land here. Most of the
Canadian institutions have all the information available on their
websites, and you can even contact them through email and ask any
questions if you need to.
If your first language is not English, and you feel you need to get
additional support in it. Get enrolled in some ESL programs.
Please ignore any advice from your relatives/friends who tell you that, "it
is a waste of time. You will not get a job even if you improve your
qualifications. The best way to go is to first get employed, then get
yourself laid off, then fight with the employment insurance to get you a
course, instead of wasting your own money"...
I know majority of the
immigrants, especially Asians follow along those line of thinking and give up
even before they get started.
I think this is poverty
consciousness
speaking out.
I have been given this advice, and went on to study further inspite of it and later got into a better paying job.
Don’t let others dictate your dreams.
Follow your
heart.
Though by all means get as much
information before you get started. Do some research to find out what are
the most highly in demand qualifications, the best educational
institutions , etc…
Do your full research. Make informed
decisions and then follow your dreams. Do not give up just because someone
else says so.
I know people who have climbed
right to the top and others who have been held back captives to their own
limited thinking.
