Pregnancy
After Menopause
After normal menopause, a woman's ovaries stop producing eggs.
Once a woman has not ovulated for twelve consecutive months, she is
officially over menopause.
Menstruation does
not happen anymore. Hence normal conception for pregnancy is not possible. However in
this day and age of scientific breakthroughs, it is possible to get pregnant
at almost any age. In recent years, there have been true records of over 70
years old giving birth to healthy babies.
Yes, you can still get pregnant and give
birth to a healthy baby. Though you will have to find a donor mother to
supply the egg for the baby, since your own supply of eggs has stopped. The
egg is then fertilized with the father's sperm, using in-vitro or 'test
tube' fertilization. This process is carried out under the care of
professional fertility doctors specialized in such procedures.
In this situation, you cannot be the
biological mother of your baby,
Yet, Post-menopause women are still
able to be 'carriers' ... that is they can get pregnant through 'assisted
conception'... Through the use of donor
eggs and invitrio fertilization. This means the donor egg is fertilized with
sperms through an injection, and then is placed in the women's womb for growth or
incubation. The woman then carries the baby for the full normal nine months, and
can give birth in the usual manner. Consult your doctor if you are interested in getting pregnant after
menopause. Very close monitoring by the doctor is required in this case.
Pregnancy after menopause
May be considered by woman who want to
experience motherhood even though they are not able to be biological
mothers. Or they consider the risks and benefits associated with assisted
pregnancy after menopause to be greater as compared to other options
like adoption.
Ethical Considerations of Pregnancy after menopause
However the sheer ethical consideration of
giving birth after menopause should not be dismissed. To be able to raise a
child providing proper nurturing care, and be there for him or her as he/she
grows up is every parents responsibility. If you are getting pregnant after
menopause, this means, you are already in your late 60's or 70's or more...
-
Are you healthy or energetic enough to be able
to provide proper care and stimulation to the child?
-
What happens if you pass away, while your
child is still quite young... have you considered who will be responsible
for the care and nurture of your child while you are no more?
-
Is it wise to put a child at risk for what
ever reason?
Giving Birth at an advanced age, is a very
serious issue, and should be considered with utmost care and consideration.
