Discriminating Employers / Bosses:
For what ever the official policy of the
Canadian government may be, it is a well established fact beyond doubt, that the
hiring and firing process is based largely on the personal affinities of
the hiring Manager.
That is why you will find certain
businesses dominated predominantly by certain nationalities or certain
religious groups.
I have personally seen this happen
and know of others that have too... for instance I know of a certain
manager in a private company who hired predominantly from his own
nationality... most of them were his own friends or relatives, some of
whom got jobs almost the day they placed their feet on the Canadian soil –
and this is almost a universal case in most service industries/businesses.
In my own case for my first job, I was
hired by the Canadian boss of 'European decent', but his assistant...
my immediate supervisor who was of Asian decent, kept making life so
difficult for me in really subtle ways...
Simply because he had some one
else he wanted in that position. Ultimately I resigned in total
frustration. of course as a new landed immigrant I did not want to
create a legal situation and spoil my future employment/citizenship
records.
In another situation... and this time
it was a 25 Million dollar company! The new manager replacing one who was
going on a year long maternity leave, very subtly yet slowly started
replacing all the employees who had been hired by the previous manager...
fortunately, I was offered another job right on time, and resigned before
it was my turn.
Another problem frequently faced by
immigrants is...
Most of the hiring office managers
in for instance accounting jobs/service industry etc. are just grade 12.
They have advanced in their positions just because of the amount of time
and effort they have spent on the job.
So if you are more qualified...
Which I believe most immigrants are at least graduates of university or
professional fields...
So the immediate supervisor feels threatened and usually does not hire
someone he feels is more qualified or skilled than himself.
This is not just my opinion. This is the opinion of almost every immigrant
who has faced this situation.
A lot of immigrants have gotten around this one by just mentioning their
grade 12 qualifications and not mentioning the rest of their stuff on
their resumes...
Even the human resource advisors advise prospective employees to gear
their resumes exactly to the job you are looking for.
Otherwise there is a very good chance your resume will be thrown on the
recycling pile…. Based on the personal affinities of the hiring manager.
Yet another problem encountered by new
immigrants are ‘exploiting employers’...
A lot of employers prefer hiring new immigrants because they know that
these people are trying to establish themselves...
Hence are hard working. Are quite well qualified even if their
qualifications are not recognized officially in Canada. They have got a
good set of working skills. And they can come cheap...
They can be had at minimum wage and sometimes even less...
End result:
The new immigrant gets so overworked just trying to pay his bills: rent,
electricity, food, daycare if you have kids... that he has no time or
energy left to work on his dreams.
A lot of immigrants simply get bogged down in such ‘menial jobs’ and stay
their forever...
I know even a lot of PHD’s,
doctors, engineers sweeping floors and washing dishes etc. Just to feed
their kids, pay rent etc...
After a few months and then a few years they do advance a bit in their
menial jobs and continue working.
They are not able to get jobs in their relevant disciplines/ are unable to
put in the effort, or their spirit has been broken by the hardships of
mere survival.
Some of the younger and more enterprising people have worked around this
one by starting on jobs as Security Guards... They do their job in the
nights, and get some time during the day to take up courses and study...
to get upgraded in their areas of interest... this can sometimes create
health issues due to inadequate rest.
Please do not think that I am in any way
trying to scare you, I am merely giving you a glimpse through the window
of reality.
On the other hand, I have also
seen a few really dedicated individuals who despite all odds, remain very
positive.
They work really hard and smart.
Improve their skills by getting additional qualifications and studying.
They manage to get into better jobs/financial life styles... This takes
dedication, a mental attitude of success to face all the physical,
psychological and social challenges and an intense positive outlook.
