Can Flomax be used to treat Urinary Frequency
in Menopausal Symptoms:
Flomax or Tamsulosin is recommended in the
treatment of male urinary problems due to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
or enlarged Prostate.
The Prostate is located just below the
bladder, and the urinary tract or urethra which carries urine out from the
bladder, passes through the prostate. In normal healthy men, hormonal
changes onset at around the age of 40, causing the prostate to start
growing. As the prostate grows, it applies increasing pressure to the
urethra, creating an urgency and frequency of urination or other urinary
problems such as a weak stream or difficulty in starting the flow.
Flomax works by relaxing the muscles in the
bladder neck and the prostate, thereby freeing up the flow of urine through
the urethra.
Because the enlargement of the prostate
happens due to hormonal changes upon menopausal onset in healthy men, It can
be considered to be a menopausal symptom in men. And the benign form of
prostate enlargement is often treated with Flomax. Though very large
prostates may require open surgery.
You are advised to get your prostate
checked out by your medical doctor, if you are experiencing problems in
urinary frequency. Please note : an enlarged prostate could also be a sign
of prostate cancer, so it is best to get it checked out by the medical
profession before embarking on a treatment by Flomax.
Also please note: Flomax is prescribed
exclusively for use by Men with BPH or enlarged prostate and urinary
problems. It should not be used by women to treat menopausal urinary
frequency. Even though the signs and symptoms experienced by both men and
women during the perimenopause and menopause stages are identical to a great
extent.
