What is the
First Sign of Menopause?
Because menopause symptoms are highly
subjective varying from woman to woman and depending a lot on factors like
heredity, life style, general health, substance abuse, exposure to
pollution, stress levels, emotional levels, the first sign of menopause can
be different for each woman.
The average woman usually experiences a
gradual reduction in the volume and duration of her menstrual flow, also the
menstrual period becomes less painful, compared to her earlier ones. However
this is something that happens to almost every women over a long period of
time as her age progresses. So this is a generally universal menopause
symptom. In fact it could be one of the early sign of menopause.
The actual onset of menopause symptoms may be
heralded by very high anxiety levels in some women, resulting in sleeping
problems, or other anxiety related symptoms such as heart palpitations.
However since the woman might already be living a very stressful life due to
job or family or other circumstances, these symptoms due to anxiety, stress,
or even mood swings due to depression might initially be attributed to other factors instead of
menopause. I have known woman who went on to be treated for a long time for
things like their heart or depression without realizing for a long time that
it was simply the onset of menopause.
Other women may start experiencing arthritic
or osteoarthritic symptoms such as painful or stiff joints - again
this is a menopause symptom that is often initially attributed to other
health factors.
Others may experience a hot flush... ie a
feeling of heat over the brow/forehead followed by a cold sweat. This may be
the first clue for some women that they are entering menopause.
For some women menopause might show up as
excessive hair loss due to hormonal fluctuations. Or it may manifest as a
weight gain or a weight loss or even a 'hard to get rid of' headache.
Or the woman might start forgetting things
easily and have problems remembering them. She may have problems focusing.
She might feel fatigue and tiredness or lack of energy. She might feel
dizziness. Again most of these memory problems or fatigue related problems
are initially attributed to other health issues the woman might be
experiencing.
