Eye Problem

Eye problems if not birth defects, can range in complexity from ordinary infections, to allergies, to eye sight deterioration, to lens problems, to more severe eye health related issues.

Though it is an established fact that the over all health and lifestyle of the individual does have an important impact on the health of the eye. The strength and performance of the eye generally grows weaker with age, and a lot of lens and eye sight related issues arise for the elderly.

Even in the young or the very young, eye problems can still be a major cause for concern. They often may start as a mild irritation, redness, itchiness, swelling or so and may progress into more serious eye conditions if left untreated.

Always remember to treat your eyes with care... they are the one organ of your body  which if once lost can be almost impossible to regain... because unlike a few of the other organs, eyes do not regenerate. Nor is it possible to transplant the complete eye. The current level of medical development in the field of eye sight only allows for the corneal transplant or a replacement of the lense. If you loose your complete eye or the lining of your eye gets destroyed, you may well have to cope with blindness or live without an eye for the rest of your life. Also so far, no other gadgets have been developed to take over the function of the eye.

So treat your eyes and your eye sight with care. Here are a few tips for healthy problem free eyes and eye sight:

  1. Do not scratch or rub your eyes or eye lids vigorously, as this could damage the lense or cornea.

  2. If you feel any itchiness or stickyness, always wash your eyes with cold water or apply warm wet compresses gently to your eye lid. If the itchiness or stickyness persists, then go and see your doctor as it may well be an infection.

  3. Never apply any unprescribed medication to your eyes.

  4. If redness persists in your eyes, it may well be a sign of fatigue or even allergies, again consult your doctor before applying any treatment.

  5. If you feel water/ tears coming out of your eyes for no particular reason, than do not ignore this condition, it could range from allergies, to infection like trachoma which ultimately leads to blindness or even more serious corneal problems.

  6. Keep your eyes clean.

  7. Always remove any eye make up using right kind of eye makeup removers. As most of these are very mild and tested by opticians.

  8. Also do not use eye makeup for very long - Always change after  about 3 months. Or even throw it away if your eye gets infected.

  9. Use appropriate lighting for reading or other fine eye work... such as needle work etc.

  10. Never look continously at your computer or tv screens for more than 30 minutes at a time, after every 30 minutes of staring into your computer screen, look away and gently massage your eyes.

  11. Include lots of vitamin A and D and calcium into your diet... eat lots of carrots, green leafy vegetables, fish and dairy products and a balanced diet in general.

  12. Get your eyes examined by an optician every year... this should include not only an eye sight check up, but also a check up of the eye's overall health... such as eye pressure, inner linings for any bacterial growth, condition of the cornea and lense etc.
