Communication & Personality Problems:
If English is not your first language...
Even if you are highly educated
and successful in your own country...
I have seen MBA’s from India,
Accountants from Saudi Arab, Engineers, Doctors etc... being held back by
the language crisis.
Its not just speaking the
language...
-
It’s about how you communicate...
-
Your interpersonal skills.
-
Your social and networking
skills.
-
Your body language.
To be able to survive successfully, your
qualifications really do not matter.
-
What matters is how well do you
communicate,
-
how well do you build rapport
with people,
-
how well do you influence and
persuade,
-
how good are your negotiating
skills.
If you don't have big dreams and
don't mind staying at the lower ‘braun more than brain’ level of the
working chain, then you are okay as you are...
-
but if you want to move
further...
-
if you want to proceed to the
top in whatever your profession is…
-
if you want to be in the front
line…
Your communication, persuasion,
networking , negotiating skills need to be really outstanding.
Remember I did not say ‘english speaking
skills’. I said, 'communication skills'.
I have seen people with very poor
command of English do well and I have seen people with good English being
held back.
And this applies to even customer
service... jobs in sales, cashiers, receptionists, sales reps, teachers...
Where ever you have to deal with
people- which is almost in every profession.
The very first stage being the
interview process. Some of them can be really grueling even for ordinary
sales jobs.
For instance I remember my
driving instructor... she had a thriving driving school. Her English was
just a vocabulary of the few words she needed in her work. Her clientele
was limited to people with her own back ground of language... yet she did
quite well .
And on the other hand, I know a
lady who was an English teacher at a University in China. She even went to
school in Canada to improve her qualifications in search for a better paid
job. Yet she found it really difficult to get the type of job she was
looking for in administration because of her lack of communication
skills.
So better work on your communication
skills even before you arrive in Canada.
