Can You Cure Alzheimer's Disease?
This question is something
that I can no longer ignore because It is now touching me personally...
My grandmother was in
a vegetative state for a period of 9 months losing her brain cells one by
one and ultimately died with Alzheimer's being one of her afflictions.
Now my uncle, her
oldest son is in this state of total memory loss for the past three years...
Unable to recognize anyone, unable to make intelligent conversation, totally
dependant on others even for his basic needs.
Even though he built up a pretty good business empire during his hey
days....
Now a fierce legal battle rages between his adopted son and his nephews on
who gets to control his vast financial empire. while he just watches on the
sidelines without understanding a thing, without being able to comprehend what is
happening in his world... a mere puppet lost without its strings.
And then me...
I have already had some episodes of very short term memory loss... Forgetting
things, not remembering names, the scariest part of it is that occasionally
for a few seconds I have even had difficulty recalling my own name. Yet
Still I feel lucky,
At least I have recognized the
early
signs and symtoms of Alzheimers and hence am better prepared to deal with it even before its onset...
Who knows what great
strides medical sciences are able to make in the next few years when my time
arrives, but as yet...
There
is no known cure so far that can stop this disease in its tracks. Though
some drugs can slow it down a bit if diagnosed at the earliest stages. At least
4 million people in the US alone are at different stages of Alzheimers
disease or at some stage of dementia or memory loss...
Right now prevention is the best medicine and being well informed is the
key, as they say knowledge is power. During my extensive research about this
terrible disease,
excellent resources for Managing and caring for Alzeimers disease I have discovered are:
