"Are You An Expert?"

Experts, Experts Everywhere...

    A short some what  humorous article "Experts, Experts Everywhere...", describing the travails of a person "drowned" in expert advise and calling out for help.

Go to any expert and he assures you that his particular brand of expertise will make your life. Without it you are doomed. In fact the amount of expert advise with a "grab it" attitude bombarding you, me and any common person every day is simply overwhelming. Several experts from different walks of life were interviewed as detailed below:

Driving instructor: "You need to take more driving lessons before you even think of the road test."

Career expert: "I will upgrade and re-design your resume. I will work with you all the way to revitalize your self  marketing strategy; explore your hidden talents and review your career plans. Also your interview skills need improvement. Of course my charges are somewhat high, but you need a strong springboard to be catapulted into the right career. Yes let me work with you, you will get the perfect job".

Professional development expert: "Our program is geared to meet your specific targets. You are talented and just right for this program. Yes the fees are somewhat high however, the rate of success is enviable. What! You are unable to take up this program, such a pity. Is it only because of the money or is their some hidden factor we have overlooked?

I will arrange a special discount just for you. I can’t see such a talented person being denied this opportunity just because of money. You had better reconsider. I really want to help you. Its your loss you know."

Sales expert: "This piece is exclusive. Your choice is amazing. The color is perfect for you. Such excellent quality, you won’t get it any where else for this price. It’s a bargain you know..."

Here I was waiting for this all-important interview, literally quaking in my shoes with butterflies in my stomach.

I had been warned by the top notch career development consultant that being a new landed immigrant, I would not be able to land a professional job without their help.

Talk of consultancy fees. Here survival was at stake. I barely had sufficient funds to pay the bills. To be sure I under went a tough six months full of anxiety, depression and a whole lot of work effort searching through the Hunters and Monsters on the Internet. Self-preparation was a real challenge.

My elation on landing the job was beyond belief. I was further buoyed up by the sensational way this news spread like wildfire igniting a flame of hope among friends of ‘similar status’. I had beaten the consultants at their own game and without spending a dime too!

Then there was that driving instructor I had to contend with. The expert sales man who sold me my computer; the estate broker through whom I got my home; the Insurance agent; My family doctor; My lawyer, my banker, oh yes and my hair stylist too... the list is endless.

Experts, Consultants, Professionals... advice, advice and some more advice. Oh my goodness, help me some one! I am drowning in a sea of opinions, advice, instructions...utter chaos and total oblivion. I am over whelmed and feel totally helpless. Whom do I follow? What do I do? Have I lost the ability to look out for my self?

On second thoughts, aren’t I a better expert than all those ‘consultants’ out there? After all I am sifting through that flood of information trying to separate ‘the wheat from the chaff’: Selecting the best professionals, getting the best bargains, relying on my survival instincts and staying ahead of a complete rip off.

Oh yes, in the game of the survival of the fittest, I am the fittest. So help me God!
