Writing in the Flow - Free Flow Writing
Susan Perry has written a book called 'writing in
the flow'. The art of writing in the flow has been practiced by countless
writers and creators all over the world and over a long period of time. Some amazing ideas,
philosophies, inventions and even incredible emotional release has been attributed to this
concept of free flow writing.
What is 'Writing in the Flow'?
In fact, my writing practice started as a form of
free flow writing and grew from there. This is a state of writing that you start when you are deeply
relaxed like at times when you have just woken up from a deep sleep or after you
have had a deep breathing session – whatever relaxes you deeply. At this time
the ideas and words are simply flowing in and out of your mind.
It is like you are writing without
thinking... Yes you initially start writing the first words that come to your
mind, and continue writing very fast without any considerable effort on your
part to plan or structure your writing or without even deciding what you want to
write about!
You will discover that very soon you have ‘zoned
out’ and you are writing in a state of total absorbment or flow...
Where you are not aware of your surroundings, you are so absorbed in the task of
simply putting down words on paper, and you are doing this without thinking...
That time seems to stop for you - your subconscious mind or your higher
power is feeding you the words and sentences automatically... You are doing the
'thinking without thinking' thing.
In this state of flow, you will discover that the
material and ideas that come to your mind are totally above and beyond what you
would have normally written. You will be startled out of your wits... Where did
this idea come from ?
It is something that in your normal ‘wakeful ‘ hours you would not ever
have thought of. Or you might wonder where did this come from?
Some of the greatest minds that we know of today,
have created their master pieces in this state of flow.
The ideas just come and the words just flow like
the waves in an ocean -- sometimes even you might be restricted by your physical
abilities of writing or typing away on a keyboard to capture all the ideas that
are being thrown your way -- They come so fast.
-
Einstein was one such creator who openly
attributed his great theories to having imagined or dreamed about them.
-
In more recent times, the author of the
Harry Potter series has ascribed her plots and characters as they just ‘came
to her’.
-
Dr. Wayne Dyer is another great writer who
writes in a ‘state of flow’.
Your mind acts like a funnel, or a pipe where the
ideas and words are being dictated at one end by a subconscious or higher power
and you are transcribing them in a readable format as soon as you receive them.
It ‘s like you didn’t do any thinking or planning or structuring yourself... Yet
what comes out is totally perfect. You may not even need to edit it in any way
except when the errors were introduced by your own limitations of capturing the
words as they arrive.
Why not try it out yourself? You will know when
you are in this magical state ... when you notice that the words flowing around
in your mind are simply out of this world.
The state of free flow writing can also serve as
a very good form of self therapy...
Where you simply start writing the first
words that come to your mind. These would be about your grievances and
sufferings and continue to zone out progressively until you log onto that free
stream of consciousness.
Anyone can tap into this powerhouse or ‘free
stream’. It’s flowing universally all around us. Initially you may have to train
yourself to log on and flow along with it. With regular practice it
becomes like second nature to you.
Here is a recap of Free Flow Writing /
Writing in the Flow or Zone:
-
Comes effortlessly.
-
You are “thinking without thinking”
-
You are deeply relaxed and zoned out and simply
writing whatever is popping into your mind. However you will be amazed to
discover that what you have written turns out to be totally coherent, and well
thought out ideas.
-
It is a good self therapy or ‘release technique’
to de-stress you or declutter your mind.
-
The ideas you are writing about are beyond your
normal imagination or thinking capacity.
Writing in the Flow - How to Log onto the
Free Stream of Universal Consciousness - Rules to Follow:
Start writing when you are deeply relaxed say when
you have just woken up... Don’t waste time reading emails or doing
anything else. Just open up and start writing. You will soon find yourself
writing in a state of flow or zone, with the words and ideas just spilling
faster than you can put them down. You need to practice everyday at the same
time to polish your free flow writing abilities. With practice you will find it
easier and easier to log onto the stream of universal consciousness, from where
all those magical ideas materialize.
For me I get up around 3 am just to log onto
my ‘free flow stream’ -- because I have been doing this for a while, the ideas
flowing around my mind at that time simply urge me into action to -- jump out of
my warm comfortable bed and into my computer chair... because I type directly
on my keypad.
Dedicate a specific place and time for writing and
then let the words flow.
