Most work places or employers have rules forbidding workers to have inter office affairs or relationships. And it is not a good advise to have a relationship with someone in your work place. Though sometimes in the battle between the heart and the mind -- it is the heart that may come out triumphant ... if you are finding yourself in such a sticky mess of surviving work place break ups, and don't want to change your job, then here are a few breakup survival do's and don'ts for you:

  • You should be able work with your ex, in total harmony for the greater good of the work interests -- Your personal issues should not be brought to affect upon workmanship or business matters. You should be able to maintain a professionally cool and calm exterior - just as if nothing ever happened between you two.

  • However totally eliminate any social chit chat or social after work contact with such a co-worker.

  • Do not gossip about your relationship or what went wrong about it with others at work. Simply clamp up or move away if anyone even mentions it.

  • Do not spread any rumors, stories or anecdotes about your time together.

  • Do not show anger, jealousy, seek revenge, hatred -- all emotional storms raging in your heart and mind should be kept in check -- you should be able to maintain a professional neutral front at all times.

  • If your break up has been with mutual understanding, and both of you want to continue in the same work place, then it is much easier for you to get along day to day if both of you agree to remain professionally civil to each other.  However if your co-worker decides to carry on by bad mouthing you or being verbally aggressive.   • However if you feel that the situation is kind of getting out of hand and you fear physical abuse, then it is absolutely imperative that you talk to your supervisor and explain your position on this issue and your fears related to possible physical abuse.

  • Recently there was a widely reported case in the news of a marine who was murdered by her boyfriend at work. Though agreed that your co-worker may not be a psychopath, yet it is better to stay safe than sorry.  You might want to look into the possibility of changing your job, or getting yourself  transferred to another office if possible.
