Women's Right Vs. Identity Crisis
"Life
is good for girls!", Genie a second year engineering student at
the University Of British Columbia exclaims. "We get a lot of free
rides and free meals", she continues.
Newsflash:
A famous local author swims topless at the Minoru Aquatic center in BC.
She is trying to prove that female breasts are not a ‘sexual element’.
Newsflash:
A fourteen-year-old girl has sex with a thirty-year-old man. She felt
obligated to do so because he had given her a free ride.
Fact:
95% of people are followers and only 5% are leaders.
Fact:
Human behavioral patterns are fairly consistent with the mindset of the
society they live in.
Does
this mean:
*
The liberated North American woman has become a slave of her own
sexuality?
*
Or the society and media has very effectively succeeded in ‘re-programming’
the female personality? Or...
* In search for her rights, has the
modern woman lost her true self identity / self esteem?
The
above are very critical questions that need a closer look. This article
attempts to do just that.
After
a long drawn out struggle trying to outlive their identity as an
"entity", an "object of admiration" and a "piece
of property", Canadian women finally achieved the status of a
"person" within the meaning of the law in 1929. Yes that's
right. They were officially awarded the 'women's right to vote'.
They
have come a long way since then and are now fully supported by the federal
government in eliminating gender bias and achieving political, economic
and social equality in every respect. This position is authenticated by
the Canadian charter of rights and freedoms and emphasized by the
ratification of various international human rights instruments, including
the United Nations treaty on elimination of discrimination against women.
Canadian
women have achieved financial autonomy and constitute *45% of the work
force. They have statutory rights to take paid maternity leave of specific
duration and have improved access to health, education and training
facilities. They are fully represented by women bureaus at all levels. The
legal frame work and security network ensure equity in all walks of life.
In
fact the Canadian woman is a force to be reckoned with. She is envied by
her counterparts in lesser parts of the world.
Despite
the intricate legal, security and social frameworks purporting to ensure
and uphold female equity, statistics show otherwise:
*
Poverty among women is increasing. *62% of families living in poverty are
headed by lone females.
*
Education is stereotyped.
*
Women are concentrated in lower paying jobs.
*
Wage gap persists between men and women for works of equal value.
*
Child birth still affects female careers.
*
Incidences of violence against women, sexual exploitation, teenage
pregnancy are on the rise.
*
Image crisis is on the rise, as media consistently promotes the image of
delicate, beautiful and sensual female perfectionism.
The
issues outlined above are a mere glimpse into the life of a Canadian
or even an American woman.
Even
then in
comparison with Canadian men, Canadian women are more resilient in nature.
They have greater life expectancies and cope better with physical and
mental illness. They smoke and drink less, are more law abiding, commit
less crimes and do more unpaid house and other work. All pointers indicate
that women are better citizens.
Yet
despite
all the encouragement, support and positive traits experienced and
exhibited by women, statistics show that twice as many women suffer from
depression as men. The high rate of depression is indicative of the fact
that women are severely stressed.
Has
she got too much on her plate? Or is society compelling her to take up a
role that goes against her grain?
Here is some self esteem for woman facing an
identity or life crisis
