Ways to Deal With Stress For Instant Stress Relaxation

Dealing With Stress - Here are exercises, tips and techniques to instantly shift your moods and energies from stress to calmness, from uptightness to relaxation, from negative to positive:

  1. Take a really long deep breath, as deep as you can go... keep on inhaling through your nose until you can inhale no more; Hold this breath in to a count of ten or until you can hold it no more, then exhale slowly through your mouth.
    Repeat ten to fifteen times.
This is a very good stress relief exercise and can be done right at your desktop in the office - it is a very effective way to deal with stress at work; it can also be done discreetly several times during the Christmas / holiday period when all your relatives/ in laws are getting on your nerves and you need instant stress relief. It can even be done during weddings / other social events or when ever stress relief is required.

  2. After every half hour of sitting down at your desk and working, look away, massage the point between your eyes with your forefinger and thumb for a few seconds, then get up and stretch before getting back to your work.

  3. During your lunch break at work, don't  just sit through it... go out in the fresh air, take a short walk or at least do the breathing exercise described in No. 1 above.

  4. Before you enter your workplace every day, or before that important meeting, project feelings of peace and love to all your surroundings, co-workers and boss. Imagine yourself enjoying a cordial friendly relationship with everyone at work. Imagine your workplace immersed in peace, love and happiness. You can also apply this technique to your home and family.

  5. While dealing with negative or manipulative bosses or difficult mother-in-laws or other difficult people, start projecting feelings of peace and love towards them, imagine them calming down and listening or sympathizing with you. another way is to reframe and focus on the positive qualities of that person i.e. always assign positive intentions and meanings to whatever that person is saying or doing instead of stressing yourself out.

  6. Drink a glass of water... enjoying the process.... Swirl it in your mouth for five or more seconds, take it in little sips instead of all at once and try to really enjoy the process.

  7. Move... do some action, run, jump, or just go take a walk for 15-30 minutes.

  8. Take a few minutes 15-30 minutes of quite time, where you shut your eyes and stretch out, letting yourself relax.

  9. Change your position... if you are sitting, lie down, if you are standing, sit etc.

  10. Change of scene... move from a place full of tension, to a more beautiful, restful, peaceful place... such as a park, a beach, near a waterfall. Close your eyes and focus on the sound of water, or just look at the scenery around you- Focus on the green grass, the trees and flowers around you. Take off your shoes and walk on the grass, or wade in the water at the beach.

  11. Let your mind go blank for a few seconds, or even a few minutes... say five minutes while taking a long deep breath at the same time.

  12. Smile... and even try to think of something funny and laugh... the heartier the better. Humor is excellent for stress relief.

  13. Hum or Sing a silly little tune or poem for stress relief... even a nursery rhyme will do...
"row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream. Merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream".

  14.  Visualize yourself stress free - While humming to yourself as described in No. 9 above,  Imagine that you are actually in a boat, on a stream or river, you can see the mountains around you, as you lift the paddles to row the boat, the air is cool and fresh. You can feel it cooling your face as you row peacefully along, listening to the rhythm of the waves and the lapping of the water against the boat. You don't have a care in the world and are feeling completely happy and relaxed. -- This stress relief technique can also be used before any important meeting or presentation at work ... visualize yourself doing a great presentation and imagine everyone appreciating and responding to you positively.

  15. As soon as you catch yourself thinking thoughts of doom and gloom, simply shake your head, smile and start thinking of something happy or funny ... replace those negative thoughts with positive thoughts or start focusing on something positive.

  16. With your mouth closed, start swiveling your tongue around in your mouth, move it up and down and try to touch the back of your front teeth with the tip of your tongue and hold it there for a while.

  17. Jump up, shake your right fist in the air and shout "I can do it!"

  18. Lift your head and look up and towards the right for a few seconds.

  19. Stretch your arms and legs... stretch your body.

  20. Make a decision to remain calm, relaxed and peaceful come what may, and Simply refuse to allow stressful feelings to take hold of your mind. Reject those thoughts almost as soon as they knock on your door. This is not impossible to do but it comes with a little practice... to start , simply begin by  focusing on the positive and make a decision to remain happy at all times.

  21. Go do some repetitive mundane activity... such as washing dishes, vacuuming your house etc.

  22. Go clean your closet, and clear out some of the clutter there... Give out some of your unwanted/unused stuff.

  23. Go make a little donation to a charity or cause of your interest. Or go deliver a supply of food to your local food bank etc. If you can help someone you know personally, in some way however small, it makes you feel even better.

  24. Go take a long relaxing shower, and while in the shower, hold up your face, keep your eyes open and allow the  gentle jets of water to run through and over your eyes and face for at least a full minute .

  25. Use NLP or neuro linguistic programming as a instant stress relief strategy -- Get into a deeply relaxed state, then think of a happy care free time in your life , recreate those feelings in your mind and while you are at the peak of those feelings, press the forefinger and thumb of your right hand together -- Repeat this two or three times until you subconsciously start associating the action of pressing the forefinger and thumb of your right hand with feelings of being carefree, happy and relaxed.... Then whenever you find yourself immersed in a stressful situation, you just need to press the forefinger and thumb of your right hand to instantly reclaim your peaceful happy state. This strategy will require some practice on your part before you can use it successfully.

  26. Have you tried a foot massage for coping with stress? It works wonderfully especially if you are able to get a proper reflexology massage  -- getting one once a week will be enough to take you through the whole week successfully. Even if you are not able to do a proper reflexology massage, Here's what you can do: At the end of your day, use any light cream or moisturizer to massage both your feet - rubbing strongly in the arch of your feet, between the toes, on the tip of the toes, around the heel etc. next pour some warm water in a little tub and soak your feet in it for 15-20  minutes while you sit back and relax with your eyes closed and some relaxing music playing in the background. Even if you can do this just once a week, it will be good for you.

  27. Develop a strong belief or faith in the idea that 'Whatever happens, happens for the best' or that a higher power or God 'always does the best for you'... this will help you cope and remain calm and stress free in situations which are apparently beyond your control by placing your faith in the goodness of higher power or God. This way you simply do the best you can in any situation and then leave the rest to God, because you know that God always works in your best interest... hence you do not stress yourself out.

  28. Stop worrying or thinking about what happened in the past or stop fantasizing about what could possibly go wrong in the future. Remain in the present moment, do what needs to be done now and remain calm and peaceful.

  29. Stop being a perfectionist - simply do the best you can right where you are and with what you have - don't wait for this or that to happen or for 'your ship to arrive' before you do something: Start being happy right now, start being active right now, take up that hobby right now, start what you dream of  doing right now.
