How She Willed A Miracle - A Mother's True Story

The speeding bus collided savagely with the demure three wheeler ‘Rickshaw’ hurling its passengers - a frail young mother and her month old new born baby high into the hot air. Like a sack of potatoes they landed with a thump on the hard black tarred road. The impact was enough to break several ribs in the mother’s already frail body. And the baby... it's head split open and his little brain popped out like a pea from a peapod.

The mother was still conscious. The first thought in her mind was, "I must save my baby". She rose ignoring her own searing pain. With a super human effort she scooped up her precious little bundle, brain and all in to the folds of her Sari and rushed. She doesn't know how but she just managed to reach the emergency room of the nearest hospital, and collapsed.

This happened at a time and in a country where social services and medical facilities were barely existent.

Gosh, even the first prime minister of this poor nation had died in a pitiable condition, in a broken down ambulance at a road side in the middle of nowhere! They were not able to pump out the pneumonia from his lungs to keep him breathing.

So what were the chances of survival here,

• Would she be able to reach the hospital on time?

• Even if she got there, with non existent human rights, would they even care enough to look after a poor women and her child?

• Would they even have the medical technology to put her baby back together?

• Even if she did, Her poor little baby was so small, would it survive this trauma?

Only a miracle could save her pride and joy. And she was going to make it happen. This mother’s love for her baby was so strong, her strength of will and prayer so powerful it simply dissolved all the negatives. What happened next was a sheer miracle...

A team of Swiss Doctors were on a visit to this hospital, they were standing right there in the emergency room discussing the possible improvements with the local doctors. This poorly clad women rushes in and collapses right at their feet. She is clutching a baby in her arms and it’s brain is dangling out...

It was a heroic effort on the part of the doctors, they worked hard to save this little baby.

Years later I spoke to a young teen aged clerk in my office. He was tall and slim like a beanpole with his hair hanging low at the front in an unkempt look, covering half his forehead. He was intelligent, hard working and very respectful. Whenever anyone teased him about his hairdo, he would lift up the locks and show an ugly scar searing across his forehead from end to end.

I met him again barely two years back, he is a strapping young man and has just got himself a bride.

Yes, you guessed it right. This young man was that very same baby. He fully acknowledges the super heroic efforts of his mother and the doctors who saved his life that day years ago, when he could barely lift a finger himself. He also agrees that it was a sheer miracle.
