Internet Writing: Seventeen Killer Tips
Writing on and for the internet

Internet Writing: Seventeen Killer Tips.

If you are on the internet for business reasons, you need to be able to write: You need to write headlines, advertisements, sales letters, web copy, ezine articles or e-books. Your survival simply depends on it.

This is not the ordinary offline writing. This is writing that stands out as a solid beacon in a flood of information; Writing that connects to the swiftly moving and perpetually impatient web surfer. Yes you need to be able to write to:

Grab and hold attention.

Generate interest/ arrest the person.

Make a Kill/Sale.

You have already read a lot of ‘killer writing tactics’ along the information highway: You have come across the need for clarity, correct grammar, syntax and punctuation, the need to appeal to emotions, use of powerful/magical words and a whole lot more. But then this is something your competitors also know. Everyone knows and is using it. So how do you stand out of the crowd?

Here are seventeen writing tips that will make all the difference for you. These have been gathered along my way to the internet gold rush. Use them. You will see the success.

Yes you will succeed.

1. Use black writing on white back ground.

2. Use adequate spacing between lines and paragraphs to make them easily readable.

3. Break up the monotony. Use bulleted lists; Highlight certain paragraphs / sentences with back ground shading, use light and visually appealing colors; Make certain words bold/ red / higher font size. Caution: Do not ‘over kill’. Just make the page visually appealing and easy to read.

4. Use short sentences. These deliver greater impact and punch.

5. Use Direct Response (You, Your, I). Write as if you were talking to the person.

6. Use the word 'You' / 'Yours' at least three times more than 'I' / 'Mine'.

7. Use conviction statements :‘You will win’ instead of ‘You can win’.

8. Use Command (click here, Do this, Order Now).

9. Use vivid description: Describe all the benefits to the customer, highlight all the losses the customer will experience if he does not get your product. List all the properties. Describe to fire the imagination and activate emotions.

10. Use story and quote : Use popular stories and quotes or your own everyday stories to describe a point.

11. Use leading [interest/ curiosity generating] questions. For instance, ‘ How do you stand out?’.

12. Use Knowledge: Find out what your targeted customers want. For example a good subject line for an FFA page auto response is: I saw your ad, I want to join with you. This will ensure that your sales letter is read since everyone is advertising their business opportunity here.

13. Use the concept of reciprocation: Let the reader feel you are giving them valuable, information / advice for free. Inherent behavioral tendencies will make them reciprocate by trusting/liking you.

14. Be different. For example if there are fifty advertisements with variations of the theme ‘make money’, Use a different theme such as ‘Affiliates Wanted’, to make your writing stand out.

15. Use easily understood words/language. The average reader has the reading abilities of a 12 year old.

16. Use punctuation correctly to deliver the only intended meaning.

17. What ever you do, do not use the exclamation mark. This tends to make you sound unreal.

Remember your first impression is extremely important, It will make people refer back to your site / writing / advertisement all the time. Hence double check your work.

Make sure that you believe in what you are writing and your enthusiasm shows. Let it be a masterpiece of your creative talent. Announce your work only when you are absolutely happy with it and get a feeling of fulfillment. This way you are sure to succeed.
