The internet is emerging as the strongest business medium of the new millennium. Small home based website businesses are springing up left and right. Yes... anyone who knows how to start a basic web page is throwing up his/her business site. What with basic free hosting and web design services being provided by the major players such as Yahoo, MSN etc. Even babies are getting online! Yes...For a fact I do know a 7 year old who has logged on the web.

It is very similar to the gold rush of the early days and much more dynamic. For who knows you might hit it rich as several have. Yet as every rose bush has a thorn, the internet too has it's ugly side. Here are a few do's and don'ts to make your online experience a success.

1. If you already have an offline business or have professional services to offer, then don't waste another minute. Get online NOW. This will not only improve your image with your existing clients, but also serve as your free 24 hours sales person.

2. If you just want to be a part of the gold rush, remember it was not the gold miners who made a bundle...It was the service providers - the guy who sold the spade to the miners. What service can you provide?

3. There are lots of scams - 'Get rich quick' schemes floating around on the internet. These very successfully play upon your 'psychology' and before you know it you have been hypnotically manipulated. so before making any financial commitments always check the following:

  • The offer sounds logical with tangible goods or services being provided: Stay away from mlm, pyramid schemes or other sales related offers unless if you are an excellent sales person or recruiter.

  • Always check the credibility of the person behind the offer - a contact name, email address, mailing address and telephone number should be available.

  • Check the credibility of the billing services being used for the offer - are they using a reputable billing service with secure servers. 

  • Never make a sale on first contact with the website. Sleep on it and check back again to see if the offer appeals to you as much as it did previously.
