Question to ask an Interviewer
Most interview panels for employment interviews
are composed of between 2 to 5 people or even more depending on the level of the
job you have applied for - hence you will be facing at least one person from the
human resource department of the company, probably the office manager of the
company, the department head, your immediate supervisor and one or more
co-workers (or people you will be working with)... The interview usually starts
by the panel explaining what the job is about and then asking you the expected
question : "Tell us about yourself?". Once you have been thoroughly
grilled by this interview panel in different aspects of the work
requirements, your behavioral / attitude assessment, your knowledge of the work
/ job, experience etc. You are normally given time at the end of the interview
to ask any questions or express any concerns.
Yes when the interview reaches the point of
"Do YOU Have any Questions?" This is your que to ask your own questions:
You have to come prepared with question to
ask an interviewer -- lack of any questions from your end indicates a lack of
active interest from your end -- the quality of your questions could very well
be the deciding factor in your selection for the job over and above other
similarly qualified candidates. To be able to come with intelligent questions
you need to:
Questions about the job and the company:
Research the company, the work they do, their mode
of operation and all aspects of their business thoroughly before the job
interview. This is not difficult with the internet. Most companies have their
own websites ... so read all the information on the website thoroughly; Next do
a search on Google with the company name to read up on any information published
about the company -- most press releases, white papers etc. are available
online-- and can be accessed freely with a little research... so get all the
background information, then based on knowledge of the job you are applying for,
come up with some intelligent questions that demonstrate your knowledge of the
company and show your interest. For instance you could ask:
-
"Oh, I was reading on your website that you are
looking for funding for this project... will the status of the funding impact my
position?" or
-
"I discovered on your website, that your head
office is located in New York... does this impact the operations in 'your
city'?"
-
or other similar questions that show a knowledge
about the company.
Questions about the job/ work aspect
Here you ask specific questions about the work you
will be doing. You can come up with such questions by reading the job
description in the employment advertisement closely and listening closely to all
the information that is being given to you during the interview... such as:
-
"As per your job description, you require someone
with strong problem solving skills, are you anticipating a lot of problems in
this position?" (or)
-
"You just mentioned that I will be required to
maintain two of your major websites -- does this involve actual design updates
or only content updates"?
Questions about the Human Resource aspect of
the job
"I mentioned in my resume that I am looking for
a progressive career, what's your company policy about career growth -- do you
have any training and development opportunities?"
-
"Is this a new position or why did it become
available?"
-
"You just mentioned that the starting pay
scale for this job is $25000/per year, What's your criteria for up grading?"
-
"How do you assess employee performance or
progress -- is it based on length of service or actual work
performance?"
-
"What's your company policy on vacation time?"
Voice Your Personal Concerns
Here you voice any of your personal issues you
might be facing... for instance:
-
"In your advertisement you mentioned that the
start date for this position is within two weeks, however I will not
be able to start until the end of the month".
-
"Just to let you know that I had planned my
wedding two months from now, and I will need some time off for this, will
this be okay with you?"
-
"You have mentioned that your start time is
8:30 am, I have a little kid whom I would be dropping off to day care, so I
may be up to 15 minutes later on some days... is that okay with you?"
Final Question to ask an interviewer
"Can you let me know when I can expect a
response from you about the outcome of this interview -- this is because I
have been applying to several different positions -- and I would like to be
able to make a timely decision".
This can also be rephrased as (though remember
to include a laugh or humor in your voice to keep the feelings right)
"Say if I don't hear from you in about two
weeks time, should I just forget about you and move on or shall I still expect
a response from you?"
Here is an additional tip for asking
questions during the interview:
Use your listening skills... listen closely to
what is being said, and then jot down any questions that arise in your mind
based on the discussion... you can also ask these questions when it is your
turn to ask the interviewer . Though you may be a little bit aggressive in
your questioning, it is good to keep it light, include humor, laughter in your
voice and keep it friendly...
The interview panel is looking for people they
can create a rapport with and work with easily... hence they prefer
people who are easy to talk to. So don't go overboard with your questions.
Most importantly don't create the impression that you are picking on them --
Yes some candidates do tend to go overboard with their questions -- this is a
sure fire recipe for being rejected.
