How
to write a letter of recommendation:
You need to answer the following core questions
before you can start a professional looking letter of recommendation (For Format
See the letter of recommendation template at the bottom of the page)
-
Full Name of the person or business for
whom you are writing the letter of recommendation.
-
To Whom are you writing it - Most
recommendation letters may start with a 'To Whom it may concern' salutation,
while others may be addressed to a very specific person.
-
For what purposes is your letter of
recommendation going to be used --
-
Is it going to be used as a reference letter for
future employers;
-
Is it going to be used as a performance
evaluation to complete educational course requirements;
-
Is it going to be used for securing admission to
graduate school,
-
Is it going to be used by a business to
convince future clients of their competence, trust worthiness etc, Or
-
Is it going to be used to secure financial
aid, scholarships or loans.
-
Number of years you have known the person.
-
In what capacity have you know the person for
whom you are going to write the letter of recommendation -- For instance is
the letter for an employee of yours, a co-worker, a student whom you taught, or
a business whose services you may have used -- Have you known the person as a
supervisor, an employer, a teacher, a head of department, as a co-worker, as a
colleague, or as some one whose services you have used in a business capacity.
-
Your assessment of the concerned person's skills,
abilities, qualifications and competencies - Do you think the person is
adequately qualified, has the desired skills, any outstanding abilities or short
comings you might have noticed -- Here you can also consider qualities such as
reliability, trustworthiness, depth of knowledge, work performance, your
feelings
-
Your recommendations - based on your
assessment, and considering the requirements for which purpose the letter of
recommendation will be used, give your honest opinion about whether you consider
the person is capable of fulfilling his future role and responsibilities
successfully. Here you might even mention any areas where the person could do
with further training etc.
Generic
Format / Template of a Letter of Recommendation :
Please remember your assessment and
recommendations can have an impact on the concerned persons future interests. On
the other hand, your letter of recommendation is going to be used as your expert
authentication of the person's abilities or performance -- Don't let your
personal grudges cloud the letter of recommendation you are about to write -- It
ultimately also reflects on your own professionalism.
